Accelerated English Phonics_A Hangul Approach

  • 12 Weeks
  • 8 Steps

About

Duration: 12 weeks, 90 minutes per session, 2 sessions per week Schedule: Class starts whenever at least 4 students are enrolled. One of our signature educational innovations is the original phonics methodology, developed after years of comparative study of Korean Hangul literacy and English orthography. Korean children can usually master their letter system “Hangul” within a few months, yet many continue struggling to decode unfamiliar English words after six or seven years of English study. Inspired by the systematic and efficient way Korean children learn Hangul, our method applies similar instructional principles to English phonics while respecting the unique characteristics of the English language. Rather than treating phonics as a short introductory unit, the program provides comprehensive training in decoding, encoding, syllabication, morphology, pronunciation, vocabulary development, and sentence construction. It accelerates phonics acquisition while expanding the scope of vocabulary learning, enabling students to read and spell words at a Grade 10 level with over 80% of accuracy after approximately three months of structured training. It enables students to develop strong reading and spelling foundations before moving into extensive reading, academic writing, and fluent communication.

Expected Outcomes

By the end of each stage, students demonstrate measurable growth in vocabulary, reading speed, comprehension accuracy, writing fluency, and natural spoken communication.

For example, after completing Level 2, a student will be able to:

  • Master approximately 2,000 words of G3 level and 211 sentence patterns

  • Achieve a reading speed of around 150 words per minute

  • Engage in conversations at a level comparable to a 10-year-old native speaker

  • Write coherent passages of up to 200 words with a solid understanding of key sentence structures

  • Develop the ability to learn independently and perform well on a wide range of tests

Evaluation and Enrichment

Students’ progress is tracked using IXL, AR Reading, TOEFL Junior, and other Common Core-aligned assessments, as well as Korean testing framework NELT, CATS etc. While students naturally develop the ability to perform well in standardized tests, we view this as a by-product of strong language proficiency, rather than the primary goal of our program.

At home, we encourage habit formation and daily exposure—through fixed study times, recurring audio, images and texts, engaging YouTube learning, and AI-based conversation tools that promote fun, self-driven learning.

American Text Books and Common Core Alignment

American textbooks such as Wonders, Journeys, and other ELA programs are used as supplementary reading materials and references for teaching reading and writing strategies, rather than as our primary textbooks.

In our experience, materials designed for native English-speaking students often assume a level of vocabulary and language intuition that beginning EFL learners have not yet developed. When introduced too early, they may create confusion and reduce students' confidence and interest in learning. We therefore focus first on building a strong foundation in sounds, vocabulary, and sentence patterns before gradually introducing more advanced authentic materials.

At the same time, the English Language Arts (ELA) Common Core Standards, adopted by many elementary education systems across the United States, serve as an important benchmark for our curriculum design. These standards provide valuable guidance for the sequencing of learning objectives, the selection of target topics, and the development of English competencies at each stage of instruction.
