Accelerated Phonics
_A Korean Hangul-Inspired Approach

By the ages of four to five, many Korean children begin to read after watching educational programs such as “한글과 야호” for just one to two months. By the age of seven, most can read and spell Korean with considerable accuracy after only a short period, usually two months, of formal 한글Hangul (Korean phonics) instruction in elementary school. The primary challenge in Korean phonics lies in the concept of “겹받침(double final consonants),” and 연음(linked sounds) , yet even this can be mastered through consistent dictation practice in Grade 1.

In contrast, English phonics presents a very different challenge. Many Korean students continue to struggle with reading unfamiliar words even in Grades 6 or 7.

Why, then, are two alphabetic systems taught at such different speeds and levels of completeness? Through close examination of Korean literacy instruction and a comparative analysis of the decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) processes in both languages, we have concluded that English phonics can, in fact, be taught more systematically, comprehensively, and efficiently, if we shift the focus of entry level instruction from simple daily dialogues to systematic sound-letter mapping.
